Roman Fort at Welzheim

In the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD the climatic health resort of Welzheim was one of the most important garrison towns on the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. In the Archaeological Park the western gateway of the former eastern fort and its wall have been reconstructed, and the remains of a large building complex and the bathhouse conserved. Also on view is one of two fountains, out of which dozens of Roman shoes were recovered.

Casts of altars, gods and goddesses found near the Odenwald Limes and the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes reflect the religious beliefs of the era. Information boards in the information pavilion and in the grounds of the fort, and a bronze replica of the eastern and western forts vividly illustrate the former Roman way of life at the Limes – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
